Before you decide, prepare clear, targeted questions for the seller. This guide groups practical questions to ask before buying a used car—so you can quickly uncover the real condition and avoid surprises.

Vehicle history

  • How many owners has it had, and how long have you owned it?
  • What was it mainly used for (city, highway, delivery, taxi, driving school)?
  • What’s the reason for sale?
  • Has the car ever been deregistered or unused for an extended period? Why?
  • Has the speedometer/instrument cluster ever been replaced or repaired?
  • How has the mileage progressed over the years (can you show a paper trail of invoices and service entries)?

Maintenance and wear items

  • Is there a service book and/or service invoices? Are they complete and legible?
  • When was the last routine service done (oil, all filters)?
  • When were the timing belt/chain and water pump replaced? If it has a chain, has the tensioner service ever been done?
  • Condition of brakes (discs, pads) and tires (DOT code, wear, season)? Is there an extra set of wheels/tires?
  • Has the transmission had service (fluid change, automatic transmission service) and the clutch? When and where?
  • Have the battery, alternator, radiator, or coolant pump been replaced recently?
  • Are any warning lights on the instrument panel? Are there recorded fault codes on diagnostics?
  • Have all factory service campaigns/recalls been completed?

Damage and current condition

  • Has the vehicle been in accidents or had major repairs? Which panels were painted or replaced?
  • Any signs of corrosion (wheel-arch edges, sills, floor pan/underbody, door edges, under seals)?
  • Any leaks of engine oil, coolant, transmission oil, or power-steering fluid?
  • What’s the condition of the suspension (noises, play in links/tie rods, shocks/struts)? What was last replaced?
  • Do all electrical systems work (A/C, heaters, parking sensors, multimedia, window regulators)?
  • What does the cabin smell like (damp, smoke)? Has the interior been kept pet-free?
  • Any cracks or damage to glass, lights, and plastics?
  • Is the full kit present: spare wheel/repair kit, jack, tow hook, warning triangle, first-aid kit?

Documents and ownership

  • Are you listed as the owner on the registration certificate? If not, what is your role in the sale?
  • Are two keys and all original documents available (registration, service book, invoices)?
  • Do the VIN numbers on the body match the documents?
  • Can you issue an invoice or a proper bill of sale with accurate details?
  • Are there any encumbrances on the vehicle (lease, loan, liens/notations)? Can you confirm this in writing?
  • When was the last technical inspection, and were there any notes?
  • Does the car come with extras and accessories (winter wheels, roof racks, floor mats)?

Test drive and independent check

  • Can we do a test drive from cold and at various speeds?
  • Do you mind if an independent mechanic or shop inspects the car?
  • Do you agree to paint thickness measurement and a computer diagnostics scan?
  • Can we put the car on a lift to check the underbody and leaks?

Finally: write down the answers, ask for proof (invoices, records), compare the story with the condition you see, and give yourself time to decide. Browse all guides
